Vecco Critical Minerals Project

Vecco Industrial Pty Ltd is seeking approval to develop the Vecco Critical Minerals Project. The Project will produce critical minerals including vanadium, high purity alumina and rare earth elements, to be used primarily in the manufacture of industrial scale batteries.

Vanadium extraction and electrolyte production within Queensland is unique. Industrial scale battery storage is integral to Queenslands’s renewable energy transition. Experts have calculated that  Vecco’s vanadium electrolyte could enable 26 to 29 MtCO2-e in avoided emissions by 2050 for Queensland. This is approximately 15-21% of Queensland’s current annual emissions and 4-6% of Australia’s current annual emissions.

The project is located approximately  70 kilometres(km) North of Julia creek in the priority North West Minerals Province of the north western Queensland. Within the McKinlay Local Government Area (LGA).

The proposed life-of-mine (LOM) is approximately 36 years, including construction, operation, and rehabilitation. Although vanadium extraction and processing is unique in Queensland, the methods employed are well known, tested and trusted.  The Project consists of a small, shallow, open-cut mining operation.

Vecco, a Queensland based exploration and mining company has been working on the project since 2015 when exploration activities revealed significant amounts of vanadium within the sedimentary rocks in the area Vecco estimates there will be over 250 people directly employed during peak construction and more than 150 people employed in operational jobs.

Vecco has worked with AARC Environmental Solutions  on the approvals process for the project since 2020.
